Introduction

Soft jaws are a type of workholding device used in CNC machining processes where a delicate grip (or complex shape) is required. They are typically made of a softer material than ‘hard jaws’, such as aluminum or mild steel.

The CloudNC ‘Soft Jaws Designer’ add-on (available from the CAM Assist panel) can be used to create/refine an inverted (negative shape) version of your part within the jaws of a vice. You can then use the machined Soft Jaws you’ve designed to securely clamp the part down. This makes soft jaws a more suitable solution for holding parts that would be difficult to secure with standard, flat hard jaws.
