Basic Tapping

Basic tapping

Tapping of a hole based on the modelled core hole size and corresponding tap tool sizes.

  • Checked - CAM Assist will generate a tapping operation after every drilling operation, if there is a matching tap tool.

  • Unchecked - CAM Assist will not generate any tapping operations.

‘Basic tapping’ is only available if ‘Hole making’ has been checked.

If checked, Basic tapping will output a tapping toolpath for each appropriate hole on your part model. To have a tapping toolpath applied a modelled hole must be of a certain size, which is the core drilled diameter, and there must be a corresponding tap tool in the tool library which pairs with that core drilled size.

For example, if there is a hole on your part model with a diameter of 0.2 inches, with the Basic tapping option checked, a drilling toolpath will be generated by CAM Assist to drill the hole at this size (presuming there is a suitable drill tool in the tool library), which will be followed by a tapping toolpath using a 1/4 inch tap, if this is in the library.

To have a tapping toolpath applied the holes must also be either through holes or a modelled blind hole with the drill profile, i.e., modelled with the drill tip profile.

The first two holes above would have a Basic tapping toolpath applied, the right-hand side hole would not.

Rather than the core drilled size needing to be exact, each tap tool has a range of hole diameters which it is paired with for this functionality. Basic tapping will apply a tap toolpath to modelled holes with diameters dimensioned between the minimum and maximum core diameter. These ranges are shown below, the diameter of the modelled holes must lie in between and including these values:
