Using the Soft Jaw Designer: an Example

This page contains step-by-step instructions on using CloudNC's Soft Jaw Designer to design jaws for the part ‘Demo 1’ (available from the CAM Asist panel).

Though the demo part is used here, you can use the Soft Jaw Designer on any part or model that includes a part.

Within the Soft Jaw Designer:

The Select button for Part is highlighted (blue), which indicates it’s waiting for the part to be clicked.

  1. Click anywhere on the part

  2. The Select button’s caption changes to ‘1 selected’ to indicate the part has been selected.

  • Jaws - click the Select button then click anywhere on both of the jaws.

    • The Select button’s caption changes to ‘2 selected’ to indicate that both jaws have been selected.

  1. Spindle direction - click the Select button then click the face on the part that indicates the direction from which the spindle/tool is expected to approach the part.

    • The Select button’s caption changes to ‘1 selected’ to indicate the spindle direction has been selected.

  2. Opening direction - click the Select button then click the face on the part that indicates the direction that the jaws will open and close to secure the part.

    • The Select button’s caption changes to ‘1 selected’ to indicate the opening direction has been selected.

Jaw Geometry (optional)

After completing steps 1-5, these values are intelligently populated automatically.

  1. Enter alternative values, if required:

    • Length - size of the jaw stock along the X-axis.

    • Width - size of the jaw stock along the Y-axis.

    • Height - size of the jaw stock along the Z-axis.

    • Gap - distance between the two jaw stocks.

Jaw Position (optional)

  1. Enter values, if required.

    • X - in the XY plane along the X-axis, the displacement of the center of the jaw stock from the center of the selected body.

    • Y - in the XY plane along the Y-axis, the displacement of the center of the jaw stock from the center of the selected body.

    • Z - amount of height of the body plunged into the soft jaws, as calculated for the bottom of the selected body.

Cut-out geometry

After completing steps 1-5, you can amend the following default setting to meet your requirements:

  1. Corner Relief Drill Size - ensure the specified size is suitable for the tool library that will be used to machine the soft jaws; amend if required.

  2. All-around Clearance - ensure the clearance between the internal edge of the jaws and the part is suitable; amend if required.

  3. Interlock Prevention - considers the complexity of the part’s shape and how the part will be secured by the jaws as they close and when they are closed.

  1. Multilevel - check the checkbox if the part needs a multilevel soft jaw design.

If ‘Multilevel’ is checked:

  1. Z levels - click the Select button then, select the vertices on the part to define the Z-levels for multilevel geometry

    1. The Select button’s caption changes to reflect the number of Z-levels selected.

  1. Click OK

Next Steps

Once the soft jaws have been designed, the following options are available:

  • Restart the design process from scratch in a new Fusion tab.

  • Use Fusion’s features (such as the Fusion Browser).

  • Open the part in CloudNC CAM Assist.
